You should probably hook up the positive wire to the 12V ignition source and the negative to a ground.

Depends on whether it is a voltmeter or an ahmeter. If it is a votmeter then you can hook it up as 302coupe said. If it is an ahmeter or "Amp meter" then all power except for the starter should flow from the batt thrugh the meter and then to points beyond.

Not if it is a mustang.these are wired differently than a normal ampmeter and are wired as what is called a shunt.It measures the current flow between two points in the main power feed.If you connect all power through one of these gauges it will melt..
