I was thinking of getting some FPAs. I need the shorties 'cause I have a convertible. Many of you have ranted about the FE needing headers to truly perform. I would think that with good heads, headers are mandatory, but are they that good on a completely stock engine?

Next question, and I don't mean to hijack the thread, but are ceramic coatings necessary for stock applications? Is chrome good enough coatings in most cases?

I had my headers get ceramic coating. You should get coating of some sort. No coating will have your headings looking really bad in a matter of days. Coating them prolongs their life. I have full-length Hooker Super Competition headers on my '67 390. The coating was done by Jet-Hot.

coating isnt mandatory and does nothing for performance (its been proven) but if you dont coat them theyll look butt ugly in minutes (mine did). Also,if you coat them, the headers will cool down much faster after you turn car off than if they werent. One more thing, according to a test they did on one of my chevy magazines, the headers averaged about 215 degrees at idle and 266 or so on the highway (coated) and a bit over 500 at idle uncooated with the highway temps somewhere in the mid 500's but again,no power difference, actually a tiny drop in HP and TQ

have full lengh fpas on my 62 390 auto pwr steering, fit good, only had to dent one tube to get pwr steering to work right. pitman arm was hitting. according to fpa it was a problem with my car. now i dont really belive that, but others here have installed the same without problems. headers arent nessecary on a bone stock motor, but if you want some improvement its something that needs to be done. the biggest results will be found with more than just headers being replaced. also there is a thing as going too big or not enough restriction. shorties in your case may be better suited. also if you are planning on changing or improving anything(ignition, intake, etc) id recomend it.
