I thought that the Wide ratio was the gears were farther apart...close, the gears were closer. I found that a wide ratio's gears were 1st: 2.78 2nd: 1.93 3rd: 1.36 4th: 1:1 where as a Close ratio is: 1st: 2.32 2nd: 1.69 3rd: 1.29 4th: 1:1

Is this the only differances?

Thanks a lot!

I guess I need a Wide Ratio?

Yes, essentially that is the only difference internally between the two transmissions. The two tranny's also had different torque ratings, close ratios were always behind a 428 or 429, wide ratios could be found behind 390's and smaller, of course there are exceptions such as HiPo 289's or Boss 302's among others. There are external differences, depending on the model. Some had 28 or 31 spline output shafts, in 24" or 27" length. Location of the shifter can vary, as well as input shaft diameter. Generally, for street and strip, you'll want a wide ratio trans. For RoadRacing or big block apps, you'd want the close ratio.

For your application, you'll need the small input, wide ratio, 28 or 31 spline output, 24" length, with shifter all the way at the back of the tail housing (for Mustang/Cougar)
