Does anyone know what this might be? At the tip of the screwdriver - I put in the stainless bolt. It was an open, threaded hole that puffed smoke.

Did not see oil or any other fluid coming out. It only puffed smoke. Strange.

Could this be a port to the exhause passage for a hot air choke???

It is the back driver's side on a 1957 272/292 - it is in the head itself.

Thanks!

Thought there was just the water port back there, it's not the intake bolt hole is it? I think some of the are drilled and tapped into the pushrod hole in the head. If it is don't put to long a bolt in or it will contact pushrod. check out Y block .com They used to have lots of info. Good luck

Did you ever get an answer this? I’m looking at the same issue on my 1957 312 Y block.

5851 answered your question. Hole is opened up to the last pushrod hole. The most hole is used for the spark plug wire bracket on that side. Takes a real short bolt otherwise you'll run the bolt into the pushrod.
