Re: 429 distributor selection

I ordered up another whole distributor from Summit, even though it looks like exactly the same thing, almost certainly made in the same place (2x+ the price), "maybe" it has better guts but I doubt it. I'm going to try to diagnose this dead one now. Usually I diagnose first and order parts second but whatever. Not sure what else to blame as all was well one day, no spark the next. 12v going in and the rotor still spins so I can only surmise the coil or the ignition module failed, right?

So, while I checked for 12v with key on, I didn't check during crank, drops to 9ish, not good, jumped a hot straight off the battery to the coil, also drops to 9 during crank, battery dying maybe? Maybe the new Tuff Stuff starter is drawing too many amps? The engine spins over like mad.

If indeed it's lack of voltage that is the issue I guess I should hook a relay up to the stock ignition wire and run a nice hefty dedicated line straight to the distributor.

Re: 429 distributor selection

Summet dizzy arrived. It is exactly the same as the Amazon one except the guts, at least the ignition module is different, it is labeled on the Summit unit, totally blank on the Amazon one, I swapped just the ignition module as that is a whole lot less work then swapping the whole distributor. She fired right up. So the 9.X volts on cranking seems "normal" and didn't piss off the Summit version....yet. So now I have all the parts for another HEI dizzy except the module. Okay, next issue..........

Re: 429 distributor selection

You should call Summit and order a new module, and stick it in your trunk with the tools you'll need to replace it. That way the one in the dizzy now will last forever.

1964 Thunderbird 390 V8, AOD, F.A.S.T. EZ EFI 1.0, Victor intake, MSD Ignition.

Re: 429 distributor selection

i suspected the module and "should have" done more diagnostics and just replaced it instead of getting another whole unit but I was SICK of messing with it. Now that I have a brand new Summit HEI ford dizzy, minus it's module, I will get the numbers off the module and order one up, then try to sell one of you guys the brand new never installed one.
