1970 Mercury Montego electrical problem

Hello, I have a 1970 Mercury Montego MX Brougham 351C Automatic that ran just fine a few days ago. When I went to try to start the car a few days ago I got nothing.

I tried the headlamps, radio, etc... with no luck. I checked the battery and put it into another car and it started the car with no problem. I changed the sloenoid , Battery cables and Voltage regulator. It still did not make a difference.

I changed my ground loacation from the engine block to the frame on the car and got my interior lights to come and made the soenoid click.

I thought maybe my ground was the culprit. I looked for a ground strap on the back of the engine like other fords have, but have not been able to find one.

I appreciate any input any of you have on this problem.

Run a second ground cable to the back of the engine and see if that helps

Re: 1970 Mercury Montego electrical problem

Put the GROUND back onto the Block.

Get a separate ground strap and go from the intake somewhere to the firewall just to be safe.

Take the nut's off your Starter Solenoid on both sides and CLEAN THEM GOOD with emery clots or sand paper or a wire brush, then lube them with dielectric grease and re-assemble.

Your car will be fine after that.

Re: 1970 Mercury Montego electrical problem

Take 15 minutes and remove the starter. Use jumper cables from battery negative to the body of starter. Put positive cable on battery and with starter on the ground, press the positive jumper cable onto the copper terminal on side of the starter. If starter is ok, it should spin and jump. If it's sluggish, maybe it's near the end. If the starter is ok, you can spend time on all the electrical path between battery, ignition, and relay.

Thanks Guys that took care of the problem. How does a bad ground happen like that, one day the car is running fine and the next a bad ground?
Thanks again for all your help.
