Driveshaft Safety Loop Installation

Organized drag racing events often require that a front driveshaft loop be installed, especially behind a manual transmission running slicks. For this reason, plus the everyday safety benefits, I added a loop to my car.

I used this universal Summit branded loop:

I used my subframe connectors as the attachment points. (See Figure#1 & #2) I welded a length of metal to the subframes, supported by a short length of angle iron. Before I welded the attaching bracket to the subframes, I tapped the brackets(See Figure#2)to match the 4 holes found in the driveshaft loop. The loop can now be easily removed for tranny or other work. Never have to dink with the floor or the interior of the car.

Additionally, I modded the Summit loop(See Figure #3) so that the hoop was smaller in diameter. To do this, I simply drilled holes that were closer to the curve and then cut off the excess length that remained so the loop was more round. I also cut off some of the 90 degree uprights too as they were too tall.

Conclusion:
I am very pleased with the results. The whole loop is quick and easy to remove when servicing the transmission/clutch. The Summit universal kit is very complete and the 1/4" straps and hoops are very much up to the job of protecting the bottom of your car should the front U-Joint give out. The price is decent too.

This driveshaft mod really works. I did the same kind of thing to my car several years ago because I did not trust that the floor of the car would hold up the driveshaft if something failed. I had enough room to put bolts in the top and bolt the loop to the bottom of the bracket with lock nuts. I have changed my clutch three times now without any trouble. I have had to move the loop twice to clear different exhaust and torque arm set ups that have been installed on the car, just cut off at the subframe connector and weld back where needed. I hate to image the holes that would be in the floor now.
