timing chain advance?

I have a 1979 Bronco with a 400 engine. Next weekend I'm planning to install a Edelbrock 2172 cam & lifters with a Edelbrock 7821 timing chain kit. A mechanic had told me I could get better responsiveness and low end torque if I advanced the timing sprocket 4*. The Edelbrock instructions say not to install it at anything other than 0* and to only advance it only if the cam is degreed with a wheel. Is the cam already advanced or is Edelbrock just covering themselves and their warranty?

Re: timing chain advance?

I wouldn't add advance.
  • I'm pretty sure Edel grinds advance in already.
  • You haven't tried the combo and don't know if you even need more low-end.
  • If you already know you'll need more low-end, you should choose a different cam in the first place.
  • Cam advance/retard rapidly changes valve-to-piston clearance.

Re: timing chain advance?

I have read before that the stock 400 cam was set up retarded from the factory. I think that is what your guy is referring to.

If that is true, the question is if the Edelbrock cam is set up the same way or does it have 4 degrees advance ground in like most modern cam grinds do. You might do well to ask to be sure on that.
