Excessive Distributor Gear Wear

I have a 1981 Ford F100 Custom with a rebuilt 351 windsor. I recently installed open headers on my truck, and not a month later I had a couple burnt valves.(go figure). Well I pulled the heads off, replaced the burnt valves, and lapped the rest. Not 2 days later, my truck died going down the road. I pulled it home, checked it out, and found that my distributor gear had been stripped out. I replaced the gear, and within the same day, it died on me again. The first thing i did was check the distributor gear, and what do you know, the gear had been stripped out. Any ideas on how this is happening? I'm really in need of some help.

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

Re: Excessive Distributor Gear Wear

What kind of cam are you using?? My guess is that it is a steel cam and if that is the case then you need to be using a bronze distributor gear. If you use a cast iron gear on the dizzy with the steel cam then it will wear out like what you have. I bet if you change to the bronze dizzy gear you won't be burning up the gears anymore. Keep in mind that all of the debris from the bad gears is now floating around in your motor. At the minimum you should at least dump the oil and filter and change it out.

Re: Excessive Distributor Gear Wear

I am using a factory cam with a factory distributor gear. I replaced both back in November 2011, and after I lapped the valves is when the distributor gear stripped. I placed an Impact with a socket to the oil pump shaft to see if there was any oil going to the 2 gears at all, and there wasn't. Like I said, the gear has been fine since November of last year. Any idea on how after I put the heads and stuff back on, there's no oil going to the gears?? I'm so confused.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Excessive Distributor Gear Wear

have you put an oil pump in it, really have to watch the end play on the oil pump drive shaft, especially when using an aftermarket one with the duraspark distributor, it tends to be a little long and wont let the gear sit down on the block like it should to mesh the gears together, had the same problem on a 79 ford with a windsor in it, tried every material of gear made and all ate up within 25-30 miles, pulled the motor apart and saw the shaft was too long, arp tells to make sure they have some end play when you install theirs
