Exhaust on '97 F-250HD

I just bought the '97 F-250 HD I posted about before and now I have an exhaust question. I want to eliminate the cat on it and put true dual exhaust on it. I'm wondering if I can get away using an exhaust system built for an older model truck that is also equipped with the 460. I would like to do headers as well but that may not be in the budget this time. Not sure yet how I'm gonna deal with the o2 sensors so ideas for that would be nice as well! Thanks guys!

Do you have an oxygen sensor behind the cat converter? If not, all you do is take off the cat (my dad and I did this to his 88). I would wait to do exhaust work until you have the headers. And yes, headers are definately worth it on 460s. What do you have in mind for mufflers?

I may get some crap for this but I like the sound of the old cherry bombs. My buddy has a set brand new in the box from the early 80's and I may go that route. Plan on going all MSD for ignition and a set of cheaper headman headers and wrap them so they don't ruin everything around them. I do believe there is a sensor after the cat but I will crawl under and verify that. I know my 302 powered '96 1/2 had that horrible setup with two cats and two o2 sensors so this 3/4 ton will be a breeze!

HEY GLASSPACKS ALL THE WAY! I have a set on my 390 and I love them. My Dad had a set on his F350 crew and they sounded mean. Now by chance if there is one after the cat, just disconnect it and drive it around and see if it flags any codes. You will have to cut the cats before you take it to a muffler shop to do any exhaust work because (at least round here) a shop can't take them off. Theres nothing better than a big block exhaling through headers and glasspacks

Re: Exhaust on '97 F-250HD

Agreed on the sound! Will probably do the exhaust myself as a buddy of mine has a lift. Was thinking of fabbing up a new deeper port for the o2 sensor to thread into so it at least reads clean. LMC truck offers cat back kits and I think I can fab up the rest out of pre bent pipe. Truck just turned 79000 on the way to work this morning so its in pretty good condition but I can tell the cat is plugging up which will eventually take out the EGR so I need to do something! I hollowed out the cats on my '96 1/2 ton and did not like the sound!
