Got a question about a Explore 5.0

I've got a 1979 f150 4x4 4 speed that's been a side project and I have a 302 out of a explore and was thinking of putting it in the truck. I've got the carb, intake, distributor that will all work, but I'm not sure about the flywheel and harmonic balancer. What flywheel and balancer would I need for the engine? The trans is a NP435 4 speed manua.

Re: Got a question about a Explore 5.0

The balance in the change from "302" to 5.0L" was 1981 for most models. The big question is if you are planning to use the '79 brackets and accessories, or the Explorer brackets? Not only the balance changed between them, but pump rotation, timing cover design, pulley spacing, oil pan, dipstick, fuel pump cam, etc.

This generally means two paths - use the GT40 stripped to the block and heads (long block), and all the '79 stuff on it, plus a change of the balancer and flywheel to 50 oz/in versions,
- or -
use the GT40 as-is, plus '82+ 50 oz flywheel, swap intake, distributor, oil pan and pickup, and add an electric fuel pump - if the Explorer accessory brackets will fit and clear in the truck.

Either way you'll need to either drill and tap the clutch Z-bar boss, or get an adapter bracket, as the GT40 has the location for it, but they only drilled some and did not thread-tap any.
