Put one in my '64 6 months ago. Used the stock column, cut down, per their instructions. My car is a manual transmission. Good thing you have an XL because, I think, a column mounted automatic transmission would be a PIA to do - but, I'm not sure.
You'll need: the FE Borgeson power steering pump, PN 800336 and you'll also need to adjust the pressure to get a good road feel; PN 8990010. I recommend finding manual steering pitman and idler arms as well (a pain in the arss to find). Cleared my FPA headers with no issues. Plus, you'll need various universal joints - I also added a vibration a reducing universal joint instead of the ugly rag joint. It will take an effort to get it done, but, the end results are worth the effort.
