460 timing marker off

I've got my motor running like a madman BUT (I have a dial-in timing light) when I put the timing light on it, it shows that it's running best (I moved the distributor just advanced enough so it doesn't buck the starter too hard) when the marker is somewhere 15-20 retarded. I've checked all I can, and can't find anything wrong. Is it possible that the previous owner put the wrong vibration damper on it? Are there different timing marks on or timing indicator tabs on the 460's? It's a '79 block. There is know way in hell it's actually running that far retarded. I just can't seem to figure out why the timing mark is so far off. The current indicator is bolted to the motor and is set about 10 o'clock. The mark at zero calibration at the light shows to be around 12 o'clock. Does that make sense. My vibration damper has the TC mark and graduated marks for up to 15 deg. advanced or so. I'm not sure if any of this has made any sense but if you guys could throw some ideas my way I'd be very grateful.

The only thing I can think of that might cause this is that the motor has a 68-71 timing chain in it to get rid of the factory built in retardation in the years after '71. But I wouldn't think that as long as it was installed correctly that it would affect it at all.

Thanks, Nick

To be honest, no, not really sure about anything but the obvious. I've only owned this motor for 3 weeks now, but I guess I was just assuming that the balancer has a keyway in it. I suppose it's possible that they installed the balancer without the keyway, but that would be the first thing they did wrong that I've seen so far. The motor was professionally built but I suppose there is always the possibility that they forgot the key when they installed it. Am I nuts or does every balancer have a keyway? I don't really see how it could slip, so I haven't even thought of that. Please tell me if I'm missing something.

Thanks, Nick

the early 429/460s had a different time set the later ones were retarded so if you change cams or time sets there may be a problem. when you put on the time gear and chain and before you put the rest together, put the balencer on and install the timing pointer then remark the balencer to show where TDC is so timing will be on the money
