Bricked 302 contemplating coyote and 10 speed swap.

Hey, I recently purchased a 1969 galaxie 500 fastback and the engine is bricked solid. Contemplating a 2015-20 coyote and 10 speed swap and a locking rear diff from an F150. Anybody done this? Do i need a stand alone or can i just gut the f150 harness and transplant it into the galaxy? Any tips and advice would be apreciated as it's my first time taking on this kind of project other than chucking a 400sbc into a 1980 sunbird. Ridiculous you say! Yes it was!

Sounds like a cool project. There are plenty of Coyote swaps out in the world, so you should be able to piece together the info you're looking for. There should be room in the engine bay, but I think the trans tunnel will need enlarging for the 10 speed. A swap that might intrigue me more would be a Godzilla swap into an old Galaxie, I don't think I've seen of those on the web. Keep us updated as you work through your project.(y)

Make sure you get a "good" 10 speed. Some of those older ones had issues, which I think weren't really rectified until 2023-ish.

I have this exact powertrain in my 2024 F150 Lariat. It's a great engine, transmission is a bit annoying (too many gears, imo). But you will definitely need to modify the trans tunnel, get a custom driveshaft made, and figure out the mounts and harness you need.

Why not go with a built 302? Probably cheaper and WAY easier since there's one in there already.

I haven't done the coyote swap but I did swap a later model (10 years ago lol) PCM controlled drivetrain into my old crate.
There are some pictures in my gallery here.

If you have the space, definitely recommend get the donor vehicle in hand and keep it for inventory until you are done. Get the FORscan tool and software and check everything you can before the swap.

Theres a few paths you can take for the swap just depends on your abilities. Easiest IMO is to get a ford racing control pack. Its plug and play with just a hand full of wires to connect power, ground, switch power etc. These come in Gen 1/2/3 auto/manual combos. If you want the 10 speed youll have to get a gen 3 coyote combo. Gen 1 and 2 are only available with 6r80. You can buy a "crank a pallet" which typically comes from wrecked vehicles with the computers programmed ready to run. Problem here is in some of those cases you have to keep the gauge bezel,BCM and other modules along with extra wires you dont need from a factory harness. You could buy a wrecked vehicle and pull the harness, figure out what you do/dont need reprogram the pcm to get rid of the misc modules you dont need from a factory vehicle.

There is a company US shift who makes a 10speed controller but i dont know the full details about it. If you went this route you could potentially go with a gen 1 or 2 coyote.

I swapped a gen 2/t56 in my 63 using the FRCP.

Or you could build a nice 302 🤪

Serious question, how much are you willing to spend on this?

A Coyote engine would be awesome, but the 10 speed transmissions have been pretty problematic, I understand. You're likely to be $10k-15k into it by the time it's up and running again, and have a nice showpiece.
Or for $3-4k you could get a nice 300+ hp blueprint 302 that bolts right in.

Not saying it's a bad idea, but you really gotta WANT a Coyote to make it make sense.

Will the swap satisfy your motivations? Why are you doing the swap? There are many options depending on your motivations, from a 500+hp injected turbo 302 to a classic 500 to 1000hp 429/460/532 swap, and either is more of a 'drop-in'. What is motivating you?

Keep in-mind this is more of a technical swap than mechanical, where getting the engine and trans in is likely the quicker part. If you don't love electronic mysteries... ;) I can't tell you how many custom cars I've done that were disappointments for the owners, where 99% don't care what they did, 1% say "that's cool" as they stroll past it in the show parking lot, and 0.01% are freaked and talk at you for an hour. Oops, forgot the 10% that grumble you have committed a mortal sin. :ROFLMAO:

I have no issues for whatever you want to do. It's yours. But after so many years of doing stuff like this, I first ask why, and put some thought if it will satisfy your motivations, or if something else could do that better. 🤷‍♂️
