My uncle keeps saying how great Flowmasters are and how I shouldn't even consider anything else. I have been looking at piecing together a header back exhaust system with Summit parts, including Summit Race Mufflers. Is there any shame in that?

I personally don't like Flowmasters. I bought some several years ago because it was the cool thing to do and I never was happy with the sound or performance. There are a lot better choices out there. Any straight through muffler will flow better than Flowmasters and a lot of other choices will sound better too.

The question is: whose muffler is Summit white labeling and selling as their own? They don't manufacture their own products. The Summit ignition box I bought is a repackaged Mallory Hy-Fire.

No shame in it at all, anymore than making chili with store-brand canned tomatos vs. Hunt's or Libby's.

That's exactly what I was thinking. See I buy Kroger brand stuff all the time at the grocery store, but it's just other manufacturers (probably the leading ones) making the same thing and putting a different label on it.

Unfairlane... I would like to see/hear those videos. How?

Thanks everyone for the info.

One more question... what's the deal with ceramic coated headers? Should I get those versus the painted? And if I do should I get ceramic coated reducers or just painted?

I am running summit race mufflers with 3 incg pipe and and xpipe all from summit. 302 big cam in a 67 fairlane. I love the way it sounds. I have videos if you want to hear. I like the sound better then Flowbastards. In my own opinion

On two differant occasions I tested flowmasters on the dyno, the first time they LOST 49 HP to an open header./ The second time, it LOST 67 or 68 HP to an open header, THE last straw, an engine customer who had flowmasters on his car, removed them and picked up 4 whole MPH and two to three tenths at the drags. THEY JUST PLAIN SUCK. PERIOD.

I'm on my third set of Walker Dynomax super turbos's :D They have been on my last three fox mustangs!!

I love the way they sound with the fiberglass in them. Plenty of power, and I can live without the drone of the toilet flushing sound Flowmaster.

FWIW, 306, Carter AFB, Edelbrock RPM heads, Isky roller, Shorty headers into an H-pipe, then the 2 1/4" Dynomax system.. It's heaven I'm tellin ya!!! Summit had their "Summit bucks" program going, I just picked up the full cat back exhaust system for $169.00.

The very best mufflers you can buy are MAGNAFLOWS. I tested every muffler foe the Engine Master contest, andd NONE were better than the Magnaflow. Sometimes they actually make MORE HP than open headers. They never loose more than 3 or 4 HP , even on an 840 BB Chevy.

It's hard to argure with proven dyno results....but,
I bought one of the earliest sets of Flowmasters in 1991, back then I don't recall any 30,40,50 designations. They were at least, good quality, I still have the same set on the pickup I put them on and they are holding up very well. As for HP, I don't have a dyno, but its not the first time I have heard they suck HP wise, and guys like BIGJOE are probably correct in saying so.

I also have a project car going that will have Magnaflows,as I feel they are the latest thinking in exhaust and stainless construction. Stainless makes for a very nice sounding and long lasting exhaust system.

But hey, I just had to have Corvair turbo mufflers when they became the rage in the early 70s.

To each his own.

I have watched the flowmaster threads a few times now and one thing that has never been addressed is what muffler are you complaining about? Their very loud or drone. Which series are you talking about 40, 60, 70? I have the 70's direct on my Tri-y headers with no tail pipe at the moment and I'm suprised at how quiet they actually are. I'm not after max hoursepower here. I will report again when I get the complete exhaust finished, that will be awhile though. Regards from sunny Germany,

I've heard the 30 series Flowmasters too.....tons of drone.

Hmmmm that's some good info, glad I caught it now seeings how I'll be doin the exhaust next week. I was going to go with the Flowmasters (never had em before) but now I'm starting to re-think that. It's a 351c in a 67 Falcon and almost ready for the street again for the first time with the new block. Just out of curiosity, what are the usual prices in comparison?

This thread has good timing as I was considering flowmasters but was worried about drone. I'll get magnaflows now.

I love my Flow Masters. I run the two chamber dealios on most of my junk. If you run a full exhaust (pipes exit near rear bumper) I have had no problems with droan or otherwise. I currently have a set of DynoMax race bullets bolted directly to the header collectors on a raced out 427 Chevy Nova, It is loud, just wish it was louder. Anyhoot, the point I am getting at here is I am not old enough yet for a perfectly tuned engine humming at 7000 rpm's with open headers to be considered bothersome. It has always been a known fact that mufflers of any type rob horsepower. Save a few bucks and when you go to the track, pull them off for an all out run.

flow masters suck, magna flows are great but basically a copy of a borla....even more money. The hooker aero chamber muffs are excellent too, they are about on par with the magnaflow or borlas in performance and about 55.00 each. I spent the dough and bought borlas, magnaflow does make cheaper mufflers (non SS) as well, available at most muffler shops.

I have a buddy with a Boss 302 car and Spintechs with an X pipe, its about the meanest sounding small block i have ever heard

Yeah my 347 doesn't sound too shabby either. I'm using an H-pipe and it definitely sets off the car alarms. I believe they are around 90db at idle and 116db at WOT. I love the way they sound.
