With severe valve float you will hear the valves 'slamming' and feel the engine loose power. A lot of power. If the engine pulls hard all the way until the valves starts floating, then your valve springs are not stiff enough. If your engine have passed peak power and you drive it into valve float, get a lower rev limiter.
