I pulled my engine for a rebuild (1973 mach 1 351c) and want to put a new trans behind it, I figured I mines well go c4. Was wondering a few questions will the driveshaft from my FMX fit? I heard It just needs a new yoke? Also what other parts will I need and what should still work? Do I need a new shifter, flywheel, and linkage? Is it a tough swap?

Thanks,
Jim

I HATE TO BREAK IT TO YOU 77BRONCO, BUT A CLEVELAND IS NOT CONSIDERED A BIG BLOCK. ALSO THE CLEVELAND ONLY CAME WITH THE SMALL BLOCK BELL HOUSING LIKE A 302,351W. THE 351M AND 400 HAVE THE BIG BLOCK BELL HOUSING (C6). MY FMX HAS THE SMALL BLOCK BELL HOUSING THAT ORIGANLY CAME WITH MY 70 COUGAR WITH A 351C. NEXT, I HAVE ALREADY DONE THE SWAP FROM AN FMX TO A C4 AND THERE IS ALOT MORE TO IT THAN qtrmiler STATED. FIRST, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE THE YOKE JUST MATCH UP U-JOINT CAPS. ALSO, THE FMX HAS A CONVERTOR BOLT PATTERN OF 11 7/16 WITH THE 351C. THE CLEVELAND FLEX PLATE WILL NOT FIT INSIDE THE C4. THE C4 I INSTALLED HAD A PATTERN OF 10 1/2. THIS MEANS--A NEW FLEX PLATE. THE CLEVELAND USES A 28oz FLEX PLATE,SO FIND A 302 WITH A 28oz AND IT IS FINE. ALSO YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE MID PLATE WITCH MEANS YOU HAVE TO PUT A SMALLER STARTER ON. I USES MY FACTORY DRIVE SHAFT BUT DOES REQUIRE A DIFF. CROSSMEMBER. INSTEAD OF FACTORY LINKAGE, I PUT THE B&M PRO STICK IN. I DID THE SWAP IN 3 DAYS BY MY SELF.
HERE YOU GO WITH THE CORRECT INFO. THE SWAP IS DEFFINATLY WORTH IT. HAVE FUN--I AM!!!!

There are 2 type C4 housings.Depends on what c4 you get but some do have the 11 7/16" so flexplate will work ok.

Also somewhere above the C6 was referred to as a big block bolt pattern, but it's available with the small blocks as well.

I did this exact conversion recently and you'll need a 157 tooth bellhousing, a 28oz 157 tooth flexplate, a torque converter for c4, a starter from a 1990 mustang, the yoke on the transmission side, the crossmember is the same- so is the driveshaft length, you might need a new dipstick - I got one from lokar with flexible mesh just to be safe. Just move the crossmember back, the block plate will work if you want to fudge it a bit and modify it so the starter fits. I changed the shifter to a B&M pro ratchet, so i don't know if a stock shifter brings more complication. Great mod, i hated the FMX.

so is the drive shaft length

how can that be when the trans is a different lenght

over all length facs to mount

C-4 30 3/4" 20 3/4"
C-6 33 1/2" 22 3/8"
AOD 30 3/4" 22 3/8"
E4OD 38" 29 3/4"
FMX 30 1/4" 22 3/4"

the 164 tooth flexplate doesn't fit under the bellhousing I had- in a case fill c4, i think the 164 tooth flexplate requires a bellhousing for pan fill c4, though there are custom ones made. The 1990 5.0 starter worked for me and is close to the oil pan but not a problem to install at all. I hear the 92 mustang gear reduction starter works too but i haven't tried that. and yeah, driveshaft remained unchanged in my case, maybe if you use a pan fill c4 it would be different?
