i found this C4 under a granada the granada was sitting for about 4 years.. the owner said the trans is recently rebuild so i bought it cheap and installed a transgo shifkit in it and see how long it would last ive been driving and dragracing since ive installed it in Oktober it havent givin me any problems but

after last week saturday night dragracing it behaved really good shifting firm and nice all night long even when driving home.. sunday went for a drive and notice that it wont upshift in Drive so i shifted manually

1 - 2 and then like a free rev in 3rd

then i tried again 1 - 2 i took 2nd too 4000 rpm and shifted and it fell into 3rd fine with no slippage

this isnt my truck but its just whats its going the samee thing
exept mine needs to go to 4000 rpm to shift into 3rd

cleaned covernor!.. adjusted bands! dropped pan and its clean ! no broken stuff in it swapped modulators chek for vacuum.. ran it without vacuum everything.. the last thing we gonna do before we take it down and give it a rebuild is drop the valve body and open it and chek for stuck pistons..

we need a manual about these C4's if we are gonna rebuild it the guy i work with isnt familiar with these we need to know what engages 3rd and what makes it automaticly shift gear in DRIVE anyone has one??

its in a 1990 F150 with a mild 306 and C4 and 4.10 gears

Could someone please help F150 diagnose his problem? He is not a troll--I directed him here from another site that we both frequent. He lives in Aruba and doesn't have access to all the technical info that the rest of us can get.

I am sure that he will be grateful and will check back often.

Thanks.

I'm sorry I didn't intruduce myself I'm jurgen from aruba. Dennis suggested me to post her. I'm taking the valvebody down now to clean it and look for stuck pistons. If that doesn't work. Its rebuilding time I guess

When you had the pan off, did you try the air checks that were suggested over on Toonuts racing forum? also, if you order the rebuild video suggested there, it shows a step by step rebuild and what/how the tranny is supposed to work. Less than $40, cheap and worth a lot more in valuable info. 3rd gear is applied by engaging the hi/rev drum clutches.

If you cleaned the governor did you replace the thimble strainer/filter when you re-installed it? Did you polish the valves?

still bad news... its DOING THE SAMEEEEEEEE CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! what else could be wrong!!!!! the valve body is clean the whole transmission has new parts in it.. governor cleaned and cheked.. ( little screen also changed )

we had the trans in a thousand pieces cleaning EVERYTHING yesterday and its stilllll doing this?? come on!!

Did you replace the smaller seals in the drums that seal the ID of the pistons?

Did you replace the metal sealing rings and if so did they fit the drums correctly?

Did you install a separator plate gasket in the valve body?

Is the check ball in the direct piston?

Neither convertor or case are the problem.

Air check everything, clean the valve body, install the correct separator plate gasket, make sure the governor is on correct and valves move freely, fit appropriate seals/rings.
Make sure the inner modulator valve is installed correctly and vacuum is hooked up and working.
Make sure the TV rod is not adjusted too far and returns properly.

valve body has been cleaned 3 times already.. i can take it down in like 10 minutes hehe..

yes were gonna take it down and do another air chek

i dont have the kickdown connected.. never had and it was running fine for about 3-4 months without it..
