I'm just finishing up putting my rebuilt 289 together.I'm reading along in the "how to rebuild your small block ford" book and it says to use a thread sealer on the head bolts.I've never used any before just lightly oiled them. What should I use?
if thread sealer works the same as oil , then it could be used on rod and main bolts. next time try it on them and let me know how it workedwaste of nothing but sealer. The sealer works precisely like the motor oil would have, but is also blocks water from getting into the passages on 5.0 blocks that have the lower head bolt holes threaded all the way into the water jacket like on a chevy small block. The 289's and other blocks didn't do this.
In ANY case, the oil lubricates the threads to ensure proper torque without binding, as does the thread sealer.
Don't go gettin' all huffy... It works the same. All my thread sealer is non hardening, and has the same lubricity if not better containing ptfe, as the oil on the threads.if thread sealer works the same as oil , then it could be used on rod and main bolts. next time try it on them and let me know how it worked
i didn' say you recommend sealer for other bolts . not all thread sealer is the same , better to spec the ones to use .Don't go gettin' all huffy... It works the same. All my thread sealer is non hardening, and has the same lubricity if not better containing ptfe, as the oil on the threads.
But I never once said eluded to having used nor recommending to use them on bolts other than the head bolts.... So there!![]()

FYIthe lower row of bolts do go into the coolant passages on my 67 block 289, and on my old 66 289 also. the upper bolts though did not.![]()
